12 Dead, 14 Injured in Edo Highway Crash
Twelve people have been confirmed dead following a road accident along the Benin–Auchi–Lokoja highway in Edo State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the crash occurred on Wednesday at Egono, near Ewu. The incident involved a truck carrying both passengers and goods en route to Benin City.
According to the FRSC, 14 people sustained injuries, while several others escaped without harm.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that about 37 passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The truck was reportedly speeding when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle. The manoeuvre led to a loss of control, causing the truck to veer off the road and overturn, trapping occupants.
Patricia Onwochei, spokesperson for the FRSC Edo State Command, attributed the accident to wrongful overtaking.
She added that one of the victims has already been buried, while the remaining 11 bodies were deposited at the mortuary of St. Lazarus Hospital in the area.
