10 Dead in Abia Truck Accident; 25 Missing in Sokoto Boat Mishap
In a tragic incident on the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, 10 passengers, including two infants, lost their lives in a fatal accident near the Umuika Junction in Abia State. The accident occurred at the Apu na Ekpu area when a Toyota Sienna bus, reportedly speeding, lost control and collided with a truck before veering off the road into the bush.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the bus, belonging to a local transport company, was en route to Umuahia when the driver lost control, leading to the devastating crash. Local residents and bystanders joined forces with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials to help recover the bodies and transport them to a nearby morgue.
In a separate incident in Sokoto State, a boat carrying over 40 passengers capsized in Dundaye Village, Wamakko Local Government Area, leaving 25 people unaccounted for. The boat was reportedly in the middle of Dundaye River, about six kilometers west of Sokoto metropolis, when it sank. Most of the passengers were women and children on their way to nearby farms.
Rescue efforts were immediately launched by local divers and swimmers, who managed to save 15 passengers. However, at the time of reporting, 25 individuals were still missing. The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have deployed additional rescue teams to assist in the search and recovery operations.
