Zamfara State Faces Escalating Bandit Attacks; Residents Plea for Help
Zurmi town in Zamfara State is in the grip of fear as bandit attacks intensify, leaving residents desperate for assistance. Over the past week, assailants, identified as Sani Black and Sani Dan Karami, targeted the town four times, resulting in casualties, abductions, and destruction.
During the recent onslaughts, the bandits killed three individuals, abducted 16 others, and set ablaze a police outpost along with two military operational vehicles. The violence escalated when the attackers returned to the town, prompting residents to alert the military. However, the bandits persisted, engaging in a two-and-a-half-hour gun battle with soldiers.
The motives behind the attacks appear to stem from a prior conflict, with locals suggesting that the bandits sought revenge after soldiers recovered stolen animals from them. This retaliation has left 12 individuals kidnapped, raising concerns about ransom demands, especially with the recent harvest season providing a potential source of funds for the criminals.
Residents narrated harrowing experiences, describing the town’s trauma during the prolonged gun battles. In response to the deteriorating situation, some residents have chosen to relocate for safety, while others express reluctance to return until normalcy is restored.
The Médecins sans Frontières (MSF), a humanitarian organization providing medical services in Zurmi, has temporarily suspended its operations due to the heightened insecurity. The organization cites the inability to guarantee the safety of patients and staff, emphasizing the urgent need for improved security conditions.
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, condemned the attacks, labeling them as unfortunate and barbaric. Assuring residents, the governor’s media aide announced plans to deploy additional security personnel and engage 4,200 security guards to combat the escalating banditry in the state.
As the state grapples with this security crisis, concerns grow about the well-being of displaced residents and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to restore peace and security.
