Woman Commits Suicide After Being Forced by Father to Marry His Friend

A young woman in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State has reportedly taken her own life after being compelled by her father to marry one of his friends.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident on Monday, stating that it occurred on Sunday evening shortly after the family concluded the forced marriage arrangement.

According to Makama, the woman—whose identity has not been made public—ended her life around 6:20 p.m. following intense pressure from her family to proceed with the marriage.

A local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami Gubio, confirmed the event and described it as distressing. He explained that the woman had made it clear that she did not want to marry the man chosen by her father, saying she was already in a relationship with someone else.

“She was deeply troubled by the situation and could no longer cope with the pressure. The outcome is devastating,” Gubio said.

He called for an investigation by relevant authorities and urged parents to respect the personal choices of their children, particularly in marital matters. Gubio also emphasized that forced marriage violates basic human rights and contributes to avoidable suffering.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Borno State Police Command were unsuccessful, as spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso did not respond to messages or calls at the time of filing this report.
