Woman Arrested for ‘Kidnapping’ Self, 52 Other Suspects Apprehended for Various Crimes

In a recent surge of police operations in Akwa Ibom, authorities have managed to rescue four individuals from kidnappings, uncovering a startling case where one of the supposed victims had orchestrated her own abduction. Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Uyo on Friday, shedding light on the arrest of 52 suspects involved in a myriad of criminal activities ranging from murder to fraud.

The elaborate ruse unfolded when a report was filed by Enobong Sampson, alleging the kidnapping of her sister with a demand for a hefty N4 million ransom. Promptly responding to the distress call, operatives from the Anti-kidnapping Squad embarked on a rigorous pursuit to rescue the victim. However, the tide turned when investigators stumbled upon the purported victim and her boyfriend at a clandestine hideout in Mbierebe Obio, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, on Tuesday.

Commissioner Ayilara revealed, “She confessed to having conspired with her boyfriend and three others to stage her own kidnap, aiming to extort money from her aunt residing outside the country.” This revelation stunned authorities, shedding light on the depths of deception some individuals are willing to plunge into.

The unraveling of this scheme was just the tip of the iceberg in the crackdown on criminal activities across the state. In a series of subsequent arrests, the police apprehended a man in Uruting village, Okobo Local Government Area, for the gruesome murder of his 75-year-old father, citing land disputes as the motive. Additionally, a raid on Ayam village in Etinan Local Government Area led to the arrest of an individual involved in the production of adulterated fruit drinks and counterfeit products.

On March 8, law enforcement officers swooped in to rescue a man who had been utilizing Point of Sale machines to defraud unsuspecting citizens. The suspect narrowly escaped being lynched by an enraged mob, underscoring the gravity of his offenses.

Commissioner Ayilara assured the public that all suspects would be swiftly arraigned once investigations were concluded, emphasizing the commitment of law enforcement agencies to uphold justice and maintain public safety in Akwa Ibom.
