Woman, 30, Dies by Suicide After Fiancée’s Family Rejects Marriage Proposal
A 30-year-old woman, Abigail Adebayo, has died by suicide in Ijebu Ode, following reported opposition to her planned marriage.
According to reports, Adebayo had been in a relationship with Oniga Abiola since September 2025, and the couple had intended to marry. About two weeks ago, Abiola reportedly introduced her to his mother. The relationship was said to have met resistance from his family after they learned she had three children from a previous relationship.
She was later found unresponsive in her room after allegedly ingesting insecticide. Abiola subsequently reported the incident to the Atan Ijebu Division of the Ogun State Police Command.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the case was reported on February 12, 2026.
He stated that Adebayo was rushed to the General Hospital Ijebu-Ode, where she was confirmed dead on arrival by medical personnel.
Babaseyi added that detectives visited both the scene and the hospital. Photographs were taken, and no visible signs of violence were observed on the body. He said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.
