Wike Identifies Causes of Escalating Insecurity in Abuja

In a recent media interaction in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike has attributed the escalating security crisis in the FCT and across the nation to economic challenges and pervasive poverty. Wike emphasized that addressing the nation’s economic issues is crucial for minimizing the security threats plaguing various regions.

Former Rivers Governor Wike acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance the nation’s economy, citing ongoing initiatives aimed at alleviating poverty, a key factor contributing to insecurity. Wike highlighted the interconnectedness of poverty and the economy, emphasizing that a robust economy fosters employment opportunities and thriving businesses, ultimately reducing poverty.

During the media briefing on Monday, Wike expressed optimism that the government’s current measures, including subsidy removal and other economic policies, would positively impact the country’s economy. He urged Nigerians to be patient, assuring that these measures would yield long-term benefits and contribute to poverty reduction.

While recognizing the link between poverty and rising insecurity in the FCT and nationwide, Minister Wike emphasized that poverty was a national issue, not confined to the FCT alone. He stressed the significance of improving the national economy to effectively address poverty within the FCT, stating that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) could not independently reduce poverty when tied to the broader national economic context.
