Why We Named KWAM 1 Aviation Security Ambassador – Keyamo
The Federal Government’s decision to name Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, as an aviation security ambassador has been defended by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo. Keyamo explained that the move was part of a broader effort to promote proper conduct at Nigerian airports following recent incidents of unruly behaviour involving the musician and another passenger, Comfort Emmanson.
The controversy stems from an August 5 incident in which KWAM 1 allegedly obstructed a ValueJet aircraft’s movement, resulting in a ban from flying that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority later reduced to one month. Keyamo said the decision to make the musician an ambassador was influenced by public appeals and KWAM 1’s own show of remorse. He stressed that the role is unpaid, voluntary, and similar to community service, where a repentant offender helps educate the public against the very conduct they engaged in.
Addressing criticism that the appointment was a sign of double standards, the minister clarified via his official X handle that “ambassador” in this context is not a prestigious office with benefits, but a symbolic role aimed at public awareness. He noted that such practices are common worldwide and have precedents in Nigeria.
Keyamo also revealed that the Airline Operators of Nigeria are considering appointing Comfort Emmanson, recently released from prison after her own altercation with an air hostess on an Ibom Air flight, as an ambassador for good passenger conduct. He emphasised that his ministry has acted fairly toward all individuals involved in the two cases.
