Why Labour Unions Suspended Strike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) have decided to suspend the nationwide strike, citing assurances from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu. The joint decision follows a thorough review of government offers during an emergency meeting held on November 15, 2023.

The strike, initiated on November 14, 2023, aimed to protest the brutal attack on NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, orchestrated by both police and thugs associated with Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Nuhu Ribadu invited labour leaders to his office in Abuja to address their concerns and facilitate an end to the strike. The NSA assured the NLC and TUC that investigations into the attack on Ajaero were underway, with arrests already made, and a commitment to apprehend and prosecute all other assailants.

In their communiqué, the unions stated, “This suspension is intended to facilitate further discussions after the federal government had met our crucial demands to address the distressing abduction and brutalization of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero.”

The apology conveyed by the NSA on behalf of the government acknowledged the gravity of the incident, pledging to coordinate a thorough investigation. The labour unions expressed confidence in the ongoing high-powered investigation, with continuous briefings promised to the leadership as progress unfolds.

The NLC and TUC commended their affiliates and state councils for their unwavering commitment to the success of the nationwide strike. Affiliates and state councils were directed to cease further escalation of the strike and fully resume work on November 16, 2023.

While acknowledging the cooperation, resilience, and determination of all involved parties, the unions encouraged vigilance as they await the fulfillment of the remaining agreements. The decision to suspend the strike marks a pivotal moment, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the assault on the NLC President and ensuring justice prevails.
