Why I Parted Ways With Wike — Makinde
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has offered a detailed account of the political divergence between him and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, marking a clear break in a relationship that once played a major role in national politics. The two were central figures in the G5 bloc that challenged their party’s presidential direction in 2023, but their alliance has since fractured despite both remaining within the PDP.
Makinde explained that the disagreement stems from what he described as a fundamental clash of principles. According to him, Wike’s political posture now leans toward consolidating power in a manner he interprets as steering the country toward a one-party arrangement—an approach he said contradicts Nigeria’s constitutional and historical commitment to multiparty democracy.
Speaking to party members, Makinde said the country’s founding leaders envisioned a system where voters could choose among multiple platforms, not one where political competition is gradually weakened. He stressed that preserving such diversity is essential to maintaining public trust and accountability.
Makinde noted that while tensions within the PDP have intensified, the current conflict is not about internal party supremacy but about what kind of political environment Nigeria will operate in over the coming years. He added that he and others are prepared to endure extended standoffs if that is what it takes to protect democratic space.
Without mentioning Wike by name in some portions of his remarks, Makinde insisted the dispute is not about personalities or personal grievances. He argued that political conversations should prioritize long-term national implications rather than individual ambitions or isolated incidents.
Makinde urged party members to remain committed to democratic principles, saying the outcome of the present crisis will help define the landscape Nigerian voters navigate in future elections.
