Why I Chose Nigeria Over the Netherlands –Troost-Ekong
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong recently shared the pivotal moment that led him to represent Nigeria on the international stage rather than the Netherlands, where he was born. In an interview on the Sports Afterparty Podcast, the Al-Kholood defender attributed his decision to a timely phone call from the late Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, and the immediate opportunity to play senior international football at the age of 21.
Reflecting on his early career, Troost-Ekong explained that while he had represented the Netherlands at U19 and U20 levels, there was no clear path for him into the senior Dutch squad. “The choice was between progressing with hopes of someday playing for the Netherlands or seizing the chance to join Nigeria’s Super Eagles, who were in a transitional phase,” he said. At that time, Nigeria’s defense was aging, and Keshi’s interest indicated a potential starting role for the young defender.
Since choosing Nigeria, Troost-Ekong has grown into one of the national team’s most reliable players. He made his debut a decade ago, eventually earning the role of interim captain during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His consistency and leadership have solidified his status as a key player.
Troost-Ekong’s record on the field has been impressive. According to IFFHS, he holds the AFCON record for most goals by a defender, with five goals, including three in one tournament. His outstanding performance in AFCON 2023 earned him the tournament’s Best Player award and a nomination for the CAF Men’s Player of the Year.
Looking ahead to Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin Republic, Troost-Ekong expressed confidence in Nigeria’s readiness. Speaking to NFF TV, he downplayed concerns about complacency, stressing that the team’s focus remains on securing all three points. “The Beninoise are also aiming for a tournament spot, so it’s not going to be an easy game. Our objective is clear: three points on the night,” he said. The match will be held at Stade Houphouet Boigny in Ivory Coast, a familiar venue for Nigeria.
