Why I Can’t Stop Talking about Politicians, Elections – Fr Mbaka

Outspoken Catholic priest, Ejike Mbaka, remains undeterred in sharing what he deems “prophetic messages” regarding Nigerian politicians and elections, despite facing criticism for this practice. In his New Year’s crossover message at the Adoration Ministry in Enugu, Mbaka asserted that he cannot control these messages, emphasizing they come to him spontaneously.

Mbaka, the spiritual director of the ministry, defended his stance, asserting that he does not interfere in politics but merely relays messages as received from God. He insisted that if instructed to convey a message to a politician, even a prominent figure like President Bola Tinubu, he would faithfully deliver it.

The priest clarified that his prophetic declarations are not tied to his role as a Catholic priest, emphasizing this has been his approach since before his ordination. Despite accusations and controversies surrounding his remarks, Mbaka remains steadfast in his conviction.

This determination has previously led to clashes with political figures, such as his scathing remarks against the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, whom he predicted would not win due to being a “stingy man.” The Enugu Catholic Diocese took disciplinary action against Mbaka in October, directing him to step down temporarily.

Mbaka’s history of publicly criticizing politicians dates back to the late ’90s when he frequently clashed with the then-governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani. Notably, in his 2015 New Year Message, he predicted the victory of Muhammadu Buhari over then-President Goodluck Jonathan in the presidential election.

Despite being a known supporter of President Buhari, Mbaka surprised many in April 2021 when he called for the president’s resignation or impeachment, citing “bad governance.”

Mbaka’s unyielding commitment to delivering prophetic messages on political matters continues to spark debate and controversy, placing him at odds with both political figures and the Catholic Church’s hierarchy.
