Why Governor Fubara Missed PDP Ibadan Convention – Party Official Explains

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Umar Sani, has clarified why Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was absent from the party’s recent national convention in Ibadan.

Speaking on Arise Television’s *Morning Show* on Monday, Sani emphasized that Fubara remains a member of the PDP despite ongoing political challenges. He noted that the party continues to recognize the governor until he publicly announces otherwise.

Sani explained that Fubara’s photo appeared in the convention programme because he has not declared an exit from the PDP, unlike the Governor of Taraba State, who has openly stated plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing suggestions that the party leadership should have contacted Fubara directly, Sani said attendance at the convention is voluntary for all members.

“You know that all the landmines placed before him to discourage his political participation are there. He hasn’t publicly stated that he is leaving the PDP, which is why his picture was included in our programme. He is still a member unless he says otherwise,” Sani said.

He added, “The Governor of Taraba has made a clear declaration to join the APC, making him an outgoing member. Fubara has not made any such declaration, and as far as we are concerned, he remains a PDP member. Attendance at the convention is open to every member, so there was no need to call him personally.”
