Why Atiku, Obi Were Absent at ADC Secretariat Launch – Party Clarifies
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has addressed questions surrounding the absence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi at the unveiling of its new secretariat in Abuja on November 17.
Contrary to widespread speculation, the party dismissed claims that Obi skipped the event due to its prior association with Atiku’s campaign office.
ADC National Chairman David Mark, alongside National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, attended the launch. In his remarks, Mark described the new secretariat as a symbol of the coalition’s determination to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
“It is a physical testament to our collective resolve to build a greater nation. This ADC coalition is a historic child of necessity, inspired by people’s desire for good governance, greater accountability, and a stronger democracy,” Mark said.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi clarified that Obi was abroad during the event, while Atiku was engaged in other commitments. He emphasized that there was no rift within the coalition and reaffirmed Obi’s continued commitment.
“The programme was impromptu; most of the party leaders were not in attendance. Obi was out of the country, and Atiku wasn’t available,” Abdullahi said. “There’s nothing to suggest that Peter Obi is withdrawing from the coalition. He is still with us. Let me also clarify that Atiku isn’t the owner of the building; he only leased it, and the lease had expired. The ADC now rents it.”
Yunusa Tanko, former campaign spokesman and National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, echoed this sentiment, dismissing rumors that Obi intends to leave the ADC. He explained that Obi is taking his time to make a measured decision regarding his political future.
“No, Obi is not abandoning the ADC coalition. He will make a statement at the right time, after the Anambra election. He is being deliberate to ensure he makes the best choice,” Tanko said.
Both Abdullahi and Tanko reaffirmed that the coalition remains united with the goal of challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027, with Obi’s political timetable unchanged.
