“Why Are You a Man If You Cannot Pay Most of the Bills?” — Nigerian Doctor Criticizes 50:50 Men
A Nigerian medical doctor, Dr. Obianma Onyia, has sparked debate online after criticizing men who insist on splitting household bills equally with their wives.
In a Facebook post on Monday, September 8, 2025, the 53-year-old mother of three medical doctors argued that men should shoulder the greater financial responsibility in marriage.
“Come o! Ndi 50:50 men, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Why are you a man if you cannot pay most of the bills?” Onyia wrote.
According to her, women already contribute significantly to the family by managing the home, cooking, cleaning, raising children, and catering to their husbands’ emotional and physical needs.
“She makes the house a home, gives birth, raises children, and even supports financially when necessary. Then you expect her to split her earnings with you 50-50? You wan kpai pesin pikin?” she added.
Onyia further argued that most working-class women now choose to remain single rather than marry men who expect equal financial contributions.
She dismissed the notion of asking women “what they bring to the table,” insisting:
“That beautiful woman—whether she has her own career or not—IS the table!”
