“Where Did You Learn to Speak So Beautifully?” – Trump Questions Liberia President on English Fluency
During a White House luncheon on July 9, 2025, with five visiting West African leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump surprised many by complimenting Liberian President Joseph Boakai on his English-speaking abilities — and then asking where he learned the language.
“Thank you, and such good English… Where did you learn to speak so beautifully? Where were you educated?” Trump asked after Boakai gave brief remarks.
Boakai, who like most Liberians speaks English as his first language, replied that he had studied in Liberia. His understated response, delivered with his back to the press, appeared subdued and hinted at discomfort.
Trump continued, saying, “It’s beautiful English. I have people at this table can’t speak nearly as well.”
The event, held in the State Dining Room of the White House, included the presidents of Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, and Gabon. The summit was aimed at promoting trade partnerships and countering the regional influence of Russia and China, amid reduced U.S. foreign aid and the recent implementation of a 10 percent global import tariff that has affected African economies.
Liberia’s historical and linguistic ties to the U.S. date back to the 1820s, when freed slaves from America began settling in the region. English has been the country’s official language since its declaration of independence in 1847.
Boakai, a longtime public servant and business graduate, also speaks Mendi and Kissi, but conducts official affairs in English — the same language President Trump appeared surprised to hear him speak fluently.
