‘We Want Durable Cars’ -Senate Justifies Purchase of Luxury Vehicles

In the midst of economic challenges and public criticism, the Nigerian Senate has provided an explanation for its decision to acquire sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for its members. Sunday Karimi, Chairman of the Committee on Services, defended the move by emphasizing the need for long-lasting vehicles to serve lawmakers over the next four years.

This decision has ignited a public outcry over the perceived extravagance of the national assembly, especially in light of the removal of petrol subsidies by the federal government on May 29, which resulted in an increase in the cost of living for many Nigerians.

Karimi addressed reporters in Abuja, shedding light on the rationale behind the choice of Land Cruiser SUVs for senators. He emphasized the importance of analyzing the options available and the consideration of factors such as cost and durability.

Karimi explained, “The decision to opt for Land Cruisers was not made lightly. We conducted a thorough analysis, taking into account price, durability, and other relevant factors. It’s crucial to understand that this was not solely the senators’ decision; we conducted a comprehensive assessment before arriving at the choice of Land Cruiser SUVs.”

He went on to draw a parallel between the national assembly and state houses of assembly, where government officials are typically provided with vehicles upon taking office. Karimi questioned why the national assembly should be an exception.

Regarding the financial aspects of the decision, Karimi noted, “Let me clarify that as the Chairman of the Committee on Services, when I assumed office, I inherited a liability of over N16 billion, which included vehicles from the 7th, 8th, and 9th assemblies. Some of these suppliers have been waiting for payment since 2014 or 2015. We need to address these outstanding debts.”

The Senate’s explanation comes at a time when the Nigerian populace is grappling with economic hardships and rising living costs, sparking further debate on the responsible allocation of government resources.
