“We Don’t Support Nigeria’s Breakup,” US Congressman Moore Says, Rejecting Separatist Agenda

United States Congressman Riley M. Moore has dismissed claims that the United States supports any effort to divide Nigeria, warning that separatist movements could worsen insecurity and put Christian communities at greater risk.

Moore made the remarks in a statement shared on his verified X account following a visit to Nigeria, where he met with government officials, church leaders, humanitarian organisations, and internally displaced persons. The trip, he said, aimed to gain a clearer understanding of the violence and persecution affecting Christian populations in the country.

“In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way,” Moore said. He cautioned that promoting separatist agendas would have serious consequences, particularly for Christians in Nigeria’s North and Middle Belt regions.

The lawmaker also highlighted broader security risks, noting that weakening Nigeria’s unity could embolden terrorist groups and worsen safety both within the country and across the region.

Moore pledged to continue advocating for victims of terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, emphasizing that his concern extends to all communities affected by violence.

He linked his position to ongoing cooperation between Washington and Abuja, pointing to a recently signed security agreement as a key step in tackling violence and strengthening bilateral ties.

“The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, and that is an important step in addressing the violence in Nigeria and deepening the relationship between our nations,” Moore added.
