“We Are Close to a Strategic Security Framework to Address ISIS, Boko Haram, and Christian Killings in Nigeria,” Says Riley Moore
United States Congressman Riley Moore has announced that the US and Nigeria are close to finalizing a strategic security framework aimed at tackling terrorism and extremist violence in Nigeria. Moore, who recently led a delegation of US lawmakers on a fact-finding mission, said the framework will focus on combating extremist groups in the North-East and Middle Belt regions and addressing what he described as targeted attacks on Christians.
During the visit, Moore met with key Nigerian officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, as well as religious and traditional leaders in Benue and Plateau states and the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia. He described the discussions as positive and expressed confidence that the framework would help counter both ISIS and Boko Haram threats, while also addressing violence against Christians by radical Fulani groups.
Moore recounted the human toll of extremist attacks, describing encounters with survivors who had lost multiple family members in brutal attacks. He said the report he plans to present to President Donald Trump will outline strategies to work with the Nigerian government to stop such violence.
The move follows Nigeria’s engagement with the US after the country was redesignated as a Country of Particular Concern due to the killing of Christians, prompting threats of possible military action against Fulani extremists. The Nigerian government has since taken steps including declaring a state of emergency on insecurity, forming a US-Nigeria Joint Working Group on Security, and appointing Gen. Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence.
