Violence Erupts at Balogun Market, Lagos Island; Two Feared Dead
Tension gripped the bustling Balogun Market on Lagos Island on Wednesday following a violent clash that reportedly claimed at least two lives.
Viral videos from the scene showed chaotic moments during the unrest. In one clip, a man believed to have been attacked with a machete lay motionless on the ground. Another video captured a suspected assailant, stripped naked and allegedly lynched by an irate mob.
The exact cause of the clash remains unclear. While some witnesses linked the incident to a cult-related confrontation, others alleged it was sparked by an inter-tribal dispute between Yoruba and Igbo traders.
The violence forced traders to abruptly shut their shops as panic spread through the market, leaving the usually busy commercial hub deserted within minutes.
As of the time of this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
