Village Head Arrested for Alleged N700,000 Bribe, Resulting in Massacre of 30 Villagers
The village head of Guga in Bakori Local Government Area was arrested for allegedly accepting a N700,000 bribe from bandits, which facilitated an invasion resulting in the deaths of 30 villagers. Governor Umaru Dikko Radda disclosed this during a detailed account of his administration’s efforts to combat banditry and insecurity in the state.
Governor Radda, who has been vocal about the role of poverty and injustice in fueling insecurity, emphasized the seriousness of the situation. He revealed that the state’s newly established Katsina Community Watch Corps, with its covert intelligence unit, has been instrumental in identifying and scrutinizing those involved in criminal activities, including traditional rulers and state officials.
“In our efforts, we have come up with the intelligence unit within the Katsina Community Watch Corps. This intelligence unit, even the Corps members don’t know them,” Radda explained, highlighting the lengths his administration is going to ensure the security of over 10 million residents.
The governor condemned the actions of the village head, noting the grave consequences of his betrayal. “He was given N700,000 to allow bandits access into his village to kill over 30 people,” he stated. This incident underscores the broader issue of individuals compromising community safety for personal gain.
In a comprehensive crackdown, the state joint security taskforce has made significant strides in addressing the insecurity. Over the past year, 35 bandits have been killed, 364 suspects arrested, and 565 kidnap victims rescued. Radda’s administration has employed both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to tackle the security challenges, focusing on immediate action and long-term solutions.
Governor Radda also addressed the misrepresentation of his statements, reiterating his respect for security agencies while acknowledging the involvement of various societal segments in criminal activities. He stressed the importance of transparency and self-examination in addressing these issues, noting, “No organization doesn’t have bad eggs in it. We should deal with it so that we get out of it.”
