Video: “They Called Me Ashewo and Threatened to Kill Me”: NYSC Member Jennifer Elobor Recounts Assault by Vigilante Operatives
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, has spoken publicly about her harrowing experience in the hands of operatives of the Anambra State vigilante outfit, Udo ga-achi/Agunechemba, whose brutal assault on her sparked nationwide outrage after a video of the incident went viral.
Narrating her ordeal, Elobor said she was in her room at the corpers lodge with fellow corps members when they heard repeated knocks at their door. At first, they ignored it, thinking the knock was meant for another room. But before she could respond to the second, more aggressive knock, the operatives broke down the door. “I thought they were armed robbers,” she recalled, noting that the men were not in uniform and did not identify themselves.
According to her, the men accused the corps members of being internet fraudsters despite their pleas and attempts to prove their NYSC status with identity cards and online portal details. Things escalated when the operatives tried to force her into their vehicle. “I begged them to let us call our Local Government Inspector or PPA principal to inform them we were being taken,” she said. “That was when they descended on me, slapping and hitting me, asking where I got the guts to talk as a woman.”
Elobor recounted that one of her colleagues who tried to defend her was struck with an iron rod, while she was pressed down and threatened. “Inside the vehicle, they pressed my neck, calling me ashewo and prostitute, saying they would kill me and dump my body in the bush and nothing would happen,” she narrated.
