Video: Tense Moment Soldiers Stop Wike, FCTA Officials From Accessing Land

There was palpable tension in Abuja on Wednesday when soldiers blocked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and officials of the FCTA from gaining access to a disputed parcel of land in the Gaduwa district.

The confrontation occurred after the minister led a team from the Department of Development Control to halt what he described as an illegal development allegedly linked to military personnel. Wike, visibly angered by the obstruction, insisted that no one—regardless of status or uniform—was above the law.

According to reports, FCTA officials had earlier been driven away from Plot 1946 by armed soldiers. The minister said he decided to visit the site personally after receiving a distress call that his officials were once again being prevented from carrying out enforcement duties.

“You are aware that the development control team has been mandated to identify illegal construction and land grabbing across the city,” Wike told journalists at the scene. “When I got reports that soldiers had taken over this area without legal documents or approval, I instructed that work must stop immediately.”

He condemned what he described as an abuse of authority, saying that the military’s involvement in a civil land dispute was “unacceptable and unlawful.” Wike further revealed that the soldiers on site claimed to be acting on the orders of a former Chief of Naval Staff, a claim he said was both troubling and improper.

“I don’t understand how someone who once held such a position cannot come through proper channels,” he said. “This country cannot continue to tolerate lawlessness simply because someone wears a uniform or once held office.”

The minister maintained that the developers had failed to produce any valid documents supporting their ownership or building approval for the land. He emphasized that the same rules applied to all residents of the FCT, regardless of rank or influence.

Wike confirmed that he had spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, both of whom assured him that the matter would be resolved amicably. He stressed that his administration would not resort to confrontation but would continue to enforce the law without fear or favor.

The disputed site has since been sealed by FCTA authorities pending further investigation and verification of ownership documents.
