Video: Minister of Women Affairs Disrupts Another Unapproved Event, Emphasizes Empowerment Over Programs
Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, disrupted a program she had previously sanctioned, citing dissatisfaction with its focus and organization. The incident, captured in a viral video, has sparked widespread discussion and criticism.
In her unplanned address to the gathered audience, Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye expressed frustration with the numerous programs being organized without her ministry’s approval. “For this, women are first to organize anything that I’m not aware of. You try it next time, I will come here and get you people disgraced,” she said, addressing the assembly.
Kennedy-Ohanenye underscored her commitment to practical empowerment rather than ceremonial events. “I am sorry. Many people may misunderstand me, but I am ready to be misunderstood. I am ready to be tortured. I don’t want to break down here. This is it. I have changed the narrative. I said, no program without empowerment.”
The Minister criticized the misuse of funds in organizing programs that she believes do not address the core issues of poverty and security. “With poverty, how can you solve it? You keep talking, you’re doing workshops, you’re doing this, you’re doing that. With poverty, where are we heading to?” she asked.
Kennedy-Ohanenye also highlighted her role in revising UNICEF’s work plan to better benefit children, emphasizing the need for impactful use of resources. “I said, always cut it into two. Use half and empower the women. Then use half and do whatever program you want to do,” she proposed.
The Minister’s combative approach and her public criticism of the current system have drawn mixed reactions. While some support her focus on direct empowerment, others view her tactics as confrontational and disruptive.
