Video: Meet the UK’s 10 Lawmakers in Their Twenties

In a historic shift, the UK Parliament welcomes its first MPs born in the 2000s this week, marking a significant moment for Generation Z. This cohort, born between 1995 and 2012, sees its representation grow from two to ten MPs following the recent election. Nine of these new faces join the Labour benches, with one representing the Liberal Democrats.

Sam Carling, North West Cambridgeshire, 22

Sam Carling, now the youngest MP, unseated veteran Conservative Shailesh Vara by just 39 votes. Carling, a private school alumnus from County Durham and a Cambridge graduate, balanced campaigning with his master’s studies in pathology.

Josh Dean, Hertford and Stortford, 24

Josh Dean turned a near 20,000 Tory majority into a Labour victory in his Hertfordshire constituency. The comprehensive school graduate and soon-to-be politics graduate from the University of Westminster founded Stortford Against Rhodes, leading to the renaming of a museum linked to colonialist Cecil Rhodes.

Euan Stainbank, Falkirk, 24

Scotland’s youngest candidate, Euan Stainbank, transformed a 15,000 SNP majority into a Labour win in Falkirk. A law graduate from the University of Stirling, he co-founded the Stirling Students Tenants Association and has experience as a local councillor.

Joshua Reynolds, Maidenhead, 25

Joshua Reynolds claimed Theresa May’s former seat of Maidenhead for the Liberal Democrats. A business and management studies graduate from Cardiff Metropolitan University, Reynolds has professional experience managing a supermarket chain.

Keir Mather, Selby, 26

Keir Mather gained prominence by overturning a 20,000 Conservative majority in Selby last year. An Oxford graduate named after Labour’s founder, Mather secured re-election with a 10,000-vote lead in the redrawn constituency.

Rosie Wrighting, Kettering, 26

Rosie Wrighting captured a battleground Northamptonshire seat, turning a 17,000 Tory majority. A former retail worker and figure skater, Wrighting lives with her mother, the CEO of a local charity. Her interests include Taylor Swift’s music.

Jacob Collier, Burton and Uttoxeter, 27

Jacob Collier, representing a West Midlands constituency, shifted a long-standing Conservative seat to Labour. A history and politics graduate from the University of Nottingham, he has a background in communications and public service.

Nadia Whittome, Nottingham East, 27

Nadia Whittome, a seasoned member of the Gen Z cohort, embarks on her second parliamentary term. First elected at 23, Whittome donates a significant portion of her salary to local charities and is vocal on issues like the cost of living and climate crisis.

Lloyd Hatton, South Dorset, 28

Lloyd Hatton narrowly defeated a 17,000 Conservative majority in South Dorset. Born in Weymouth and recently a London-based political researcher and councillor, Hatton’s victory was unexpected for Labour.

Luke Charters, York Outer, 28

Luke Charters secured York Outer on his second attempt. An economics and politics graduate from Oxford, he previously worked at the Bank of England and now resides in York with his family.

These young MPs, many with backgrounds in student politics and activism, bring fresh energy and perspectives to the UK Parliament.
