Video: Benue Govt Mobilises Overnight Clean-Up in Makurdi Ahead of Tinubu’s Visit
In anticipation of President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Benue State on June 18, workers were seen late on June 17 cutting grass along a major road in Makurdi. The clean-up operation was part of broader preparations by the Benue State government, which also declared a public holiday and called on support groups to stage a welcome procession.
President Tinubu’s visit comes just days after a deadly attack in Makurdi, where over 200 people were reportedly killed by armed herdsmen between the night of June 13 and the morning of June 14. The government’s call for support groups to line the route from the airport to Wurukum roundabout and on to the Government House has generated mixed reactions, as many residents express concern over the government’s focus on pageantry in the face of escalating violence.
A video circulating online shows workers cutting grass along the road leading from the airport as part of the last-minute beautification efforts. While some view the preparations as a gesture of respect for the President, others question whether such displays will bring meaningful action on the security crisis facing the state.
