Vice-President Shettima Acknowledges Citizens’ Anger Amidst Soaring Cost of Living
As the cost of living soars in Nigeria, a wave of discontent sweeps through the nation, with many citizens expressing frustration towards government officials. Vice-President Kashim Shettima, during the Executive Intelligence Management Course 16 graduation ceremony in Abuja, acknowledged the anger among the poor, labeling government officials and the elite as a minority.
Shettima’s admission is the first acknowledgment from a senior government official regarding the exacerbated hardship since President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023. The President’s removal of petrol subsidies led to a sharp increase in fuel prices, reaching between N580 and N615 per litre.
The subsequent decision to let the naira’s exchange rate fluctuate based on market demand and supply caused a significant depreciation, with the naira falling to an all-time low of N1,099.05/$ at the official forex window. This marks a 30.36% decline from its closing rate of N843.07/$, intensifying inflationary pressures as the naira lost over 40% of its value since June.
Reports indicate that families are bracing for a difficult holiday season due to escalating prices, prompting them to seek ways to cut costs. Shettima, addressing the situation, urged leaders to focus on job creation and providing hope to the populace, emphasizing that these efforts are crucial in addressing insecurity across the country.
Despite the challenges, Shettima called on citizens to be patient and support President Tinubu’s initiatives to reshape the nation. He criticized those advocating for secession, stating that they often fail to consider the broader consequences of their actions.
At the same event, Director-General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, revealed plans for the production of unmanned aerial vehicles, AK-47s, and other weapons to reduce reliance on foreign countries. Bichi assured continued intelligence support to other security agencies and encouraged residents of Plateau and Kaduna states to convert hostilities into job opportunities for the benefit of the nation.
In closing, Bichi urged Nigerians to refrain from disparaging their leaders, emphasizing the potential for achieving greatness through patience and constructive dialogue in the democratic dispensation.
