Verbal Clash Erupts Between Tinubu’s Aide, Obi’s Spokesperson Over Political Tactics
In a heated exchange of words, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the president, has accused Peter Obi, the 2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, of exploiting “religious and ethnic” sentiments to advance his political agenda.
During an appearance on the ‘Mic On podcast’ hosted by journalist Seun Okinbaloye of Channels Television, Onanuga condemned any political campaign that relies on stirring up religious or ethnic divisions, labeling it as detrimental to the nation’s democratic fabric. He further alleged that Obi’s supporters are actively seeking to undermine the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Responding to Onanuga’s accusations, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Chief Spokesman for the Obi/ Datti 2003 Presidential Campaign, dismissed the claims as baseless and urged Onanuga to refrain from insulting the intelligence of Nigerians. Tanko pointed out instances where he believed Tinubu and the APC had similarly stoked ethnic and religious tensions during elections, including the use of slogans like “Emilokan, Yoruba lokan” and the promotion of a Muslim/Muslim ticket.
Tanko challenged Onanuga to provide evidence supporting his allegations against Obi, emphasizing that Obi’s focus remains on nation-building despite the contentious election outcome. He also criticized the current administration’s handling of economic challenges, dismissing Onanuga’s suggestion that Obi is actively working against Tinubu’s government.
