“Valentine’s Day Is Associated with a Romantic Demon Called Cupid” – Bishop Calls for Ban in Nigeria
Bishop Charles Ighele, General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission, has called for a ban on the celebration of Valentine’s Day in Nigeria, arguing that it promotes immoral behavior and distorts its original purpose.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ighele expressed concerns over the way Valentine’s Day has evolved, stating that it encourages illicit sexual activities and romantic relationships among youths. He described the day as a “deception from the devil” and claimed it serves as a “universal day of immorality.”
According to the bishop, the celebration is linked to the Roman god of love, Cupid, who he believes influences sexual desires and promotes sexual entertainment. He urged authorities to take action against its observance, emphasizing the need to uphold values that promote social and moral redemption.
Ighele referenced biblical scripture, citing Ephesians 6:11-12, to argue that Cupid represents a spiritual force that encourages immorality. He also pointed out that the English word “erotic” is derived from “Eros,” the Greek counterpart of Cupid, reinforcing his belief that Valentine’s Day fosters inappropriate behavior.
Calling on the government, religious institutions, schools, and families to work together in discouraging the celebration, Ighele stressed that banning Valentine’s Day would help protect societal values and prevent moral decline.
