Utomi Declares War on Tinubu Govt with Shadow Cabinet, FG Cries Foul
Prominent economist and political figure, Professor Pat Utomi, has launched a shadow government comprised of members from various opposition parties, drawing swift condemnation from the Federal Government. The initiative, named the “Big Tent Coalition Shadow Government,” was unveiled in a virtual event on Monday and is intended to act as a credible opposition force, providing alternative policies and scrutinising the Bola Tinubu-led administration.
Utomi argued that Nigeria is facing a national emergency, with worsening poverty, increasing insecurity, the exodus of multinational firms, and rising corruption. He stated that the shadow cabinet would meet weekly to assess government policies and suggest viable alternatives in areas such as economic planning, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and national security. He also emphasised the need for ethical governance and transparency, accusing the current administration of promoting propaganda over performance and failing to deliver meaningful reform.
However, the Federal Government quickly dismissed the move as inappropriate within Nigeria’s presidential system. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the concept of a shadow government is alien to Nigeria’s constitution and unnecessary given the role opposition voices already play in the legislature. He described the initiative as an “aberration,” warning that it does not align with democratic norms in the country.
Undeterred, Utomi insisted that the shadow government’s purpose is to hold the ruling party accountable and offer the public informed alternatives. He said the structure of the cabinet draws from diverse political backgrounds and includes figures such as human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, named head of the Ombudsman and Good Governance portfolio, as well as other policy experts and activists across different sectors.
Utomi also criticised the government’s handling of key issues, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which he said was poorly executed and has deepened economic hardship. He called for decentralised policing to address security challenges more effectively and lamented the growing emphasis on political positioning over service to the people.
He urged the shadow team to focus on rebuilding trust in governance, promoting production-driven economic recovery, and embracing ethical leadership, stating that a real opposition must not only critique but also inspire better governance by example.
Despite the government’s disapproval, Utomi said the initiative would persist in pushing for reforms and giving voice to Nigerians frustrated with the current state of affairs.
