USA Ends Nigeria’s Flamingos’ Title Dreams at U-17 Women’s World Cup
The United States dashed Nigeria’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup hopes with a 2-0 win on Saturday at the CFC Stadium, Santiago de los Caballeros. Two key goals from Katharine Fuller and Kimball Ascanio secured victory for the U.S. and marked the end of the Flamingos’ campaign.
The Americans, aiming to settle the score after their 2022 quarterfinal loss to Nigeria, found success this time around. Fuller opened the scoring with a penalty in the 43rd minute, while Ascanio’s goal in the 74th minute solidified the U.S. lead, sending them into the semifinals.
Nigeria’s Flamingos entered the match with an impressive record, sweeping their group stage against New Zealand, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic with nine goals scored and only one conceded. However, despite the early promise, they struggled to find their rhythm against the Americans.
Coach Bankole Olowookere attempted to shift the game’s momentum with two first-half substitutions, bringing on Blessing Ifitezue and Victory Ekezie. However, the U.S. maintained control, as Coach Natalia Astrain’s tactical adjustments proved effective, especially with substitute Ascanio’s timely goal.
The result closed out Nigeria’s journey in the tournament with a bittersweet ending, as they had high hopes of repeating their 2022 success against the U.S.
