US Suspends Student Visa Processing as Social Media Vetting Intensifies
The United States has temporarily suspended processing of student and exchange visas as part of an increased social media vetting effort under the Trump administration. An internal cable signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed US embassies and consulates to halt new appointments for these visas until further notice, while awaiting updated guidance on expanded social media checks for applicants.
This move marks a significant tightening of visa policies affecting international students, a group that contributes substantially to the funding of American universities. It follows previous actions by Rubio, who has revoked hundreds of visas, and the administration’s attempt to prevent Harvard University from admitting non-American students.
The suspension could be short-lived, with embassies advised to expect new instructions in the near future. However, visa processing delays are already common, raising concerns about potential impacts on students’ ability to start their studies on time.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasized the importance of thorough vetting to ensure that those entering the US understand and respect the law and have no criminal intent. She advised prospective students to follow the usual visa application procedures and be prepared for careful review.
Rubio has stated publicly that since President Trump took office, thousands of visas have been revoked using a rarely invoked law that allows the Secretary of State to remove foreign nationals for actions considered contrary to US foreign policy. Many of those targeted include students involved in activism related to Gaza, who have been accused by officials of anti-Semitism—a claim they strongly deny.
