US Surgeons Successfully Transplant Pig Kidney into Human in Landmark Trial
A team of surgeons in the United States has achieved the first-ever transplantation of a genetically modified pig kidney into a living patient. The historic four-hour operation took place at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) on Saturday, with the recipient being a 62-year-old man diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease.
According to a statement released by MGH on Thursday, this pioneering procedure signifies a significant milestone in addressing the persistent issue of organ shortages worldwide. The hospital emphasized the urgency of the matter, revealing that more than 1400 individuals are currently awaiting kidney transplants at MGH alone.
Dr. Tatsuo Kawai, a member of the surgical team involved in the landmark operation, expressed optimism about the potential impact of this innovative approach, stating, “Our hope is that this transplant approach will offer a lifeline to millions of patients worldwide who are suffering from kidney failure.”
The pig kidney utilized in the transplant had undergone genetic modifications to eliminate harmful pig genes while incorporating specific human genes, as reported by Barron’s. Remarkably, the recipient of the transplant, Richard Slayman from Weymouth, Massachusetts, is said to be recovering well post-surgery and is anticipated to be discharged from MGH shortly.
Slayman, who has a medical history of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, had previously undergone a human kidney transplant in 2018, which began to fail five years later, necessitating dialysis. Speaking on his decision to undergo the pig kidney transplant, Slayman articulated his motivation, stating, “Not only as a way to help me, but a way to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive.”
Additionally, medical experts highlighted the potential significance of this breakthrough for addressing health disparities, particularly among ethnic minorities who experience elevated rates of kidney disease. Dr. Winfred Williams, Slayman’s nephrologist, underscored the transformative potential of this technological advancement in achieving health equity and providing viable solutions to kidney failure.
The transplantation of organs across species, known as xenotransplantation, represents a burgeoning field in medical science. While pig kidneys have been transplanted into brain dead patients previously, Slayman’s case marks the first instance of such a procedure being performed on a living individual.
This groundbreaking achievement holds promise for revolutionizing organ transplantation and offering hope to countless individuals grappling with organ failure globally.
