UNN Appoints Prof. Olayiwola Usman as First Yoruba Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics)

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has made history by appointing Professor Kamoru Olayiwola Usman as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics). This marks the first time in the university’s history that a Yoruba scholar has held the position. Professor Usman, a Muslim academic from Oyo State, was appointed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oguejiofo T. Ujam, as part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity and academic excellence.

In an official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to merit-based leadership and national unity. Professor Ujam emphasised that the decision reflects UNN’s resolve to prioritise competence over sectional considerations. He stressed the importance of sustaining a culture of inclusivity and meritocracy to advance the institution’s mission.

In a further demonstration of his commitment to excellence, Professor Ujam also appointed Dr. Mansur Adebowale Saddiq as Acting Director of the Medical Centre. Both appointments have been widely welcomed by students and scholars from diverse backgrounds, with many seeing them as significant steps towards strengthening national unity within the institution.

Professor Usman, who succeeds Professor Urama, holds a PhD in Mathematics Education and served as Provost of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo State, from 2015 to 2023. A distinguished academic, he is a fellow of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria and a member of several professional bodies, including the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies and the Nigerian Educational Research Association. His initial tenure as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) will last for two years, with the possibility of renewal.

During a recent University Senate meeting, Professor Ujam called for collective efforts to reposition UNN as a hub for ethical and innovative learning. He urged the university community to reject sectionalism and divisive tendencies, which have hindered academic collaboration and research. He also highlighted the institution’s responsibility to stay at the forefront of global educational trends, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the support of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in advocating for experiential learning and aligning the university’s curriculum with global advancements. He assured the university community of his commitment to fairness, transparency, and technological progress, stressing that UNN must not fall behind in the evolving educational landscape.
