United Capital Mourns Six Staff Lost in Afriland Towers Fire
United Capital Plc has confirmed the loss of six of its employees in the fire that engulfed Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial complex in Lagos, on September 16.
The tragic incident, which reportedly began in the inverter room located in the basement of the building, also claimed the lives of four officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
In a statement released on Monday, the pan-African investment and financial services group described the deceased employees as “an integral part of our company and family,” noting that their passing “leaves an immeasurable void.”
“We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and loved ones,” the company said, adding that it would continue to provide support to the bereaved and organise a memorial service in their honour.
United Capital also released the names of the six staff members who died in the fire:
Jesutoni Shodipo (21) – Graduate intern, compliance department
Kehinde Adeoye (36) – Compliance officer
Ndidi Osaemedike-Okeke (41) – Trustees division
Olumide Oyefodunrin (27) – Trust officer
Opeyemi Oloyede (26) – Compliance intern
Rebecca Adenuga (26) – Executive associate, wealth management
The Afriland Towers fire has drawn widespread grief, with condolences pouring in from government officials, business leaders, and the wider public. Investigations into the cause of the blaze are ongoing, as authorities move to enforce stricter building safety compliance across Lagos.
