UK Police Officer Under Investigation for Advising Nigerian Women Against Reporting Domestic Abuse
A Metropolitan Police officer is under scrutiny after a 2018 video surfaced, showing him allegedly advising Nigerian women not to report domestic abuse to the police. The video, recorded at Divine Restoration International Church in Camberwell, has sparked significant outrage after being rediscovered on social media.
In the footage, the officer, who addresses the women in both Yoruba and English, is seen discussing issues of knife crime and family dynamics. He reportedly suggests that Nigerian women should “manage” issues with their husbands rather than contacting the police. This statement has drawn criticism from abuse charities, who argue that such advice endangers victims.
Debbie Ariyo, Chief Executive of the children’s safeguarding group Afruca, expressed her dismay, emphasizing that the officer’s remarks could discourage women from seeking help in abusive situations. “Domestic violence encompasses more than just physical abuse; emotional and cultural abuse also play significant roles,” Ariyo said. “Telling victims not to report abuse is harmful and minimizes the severity of these issues.”
The video has been referred to the Metropolitan Police’s professional standards unit for investigation. Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh stated that the comments do not reflect the Met’s stance on domestic abuse. He assured that the force is committed to supporting victims and encourages reporting abuse to the police.
The controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of domestic violence, particularly within Black communities, where figures indicate higher rates of femicide. The Met is working with local authorities and charities to improve support for victims and encourage reporting of domestic abuse.
