UK Government to Issue 43,000 Seasonal Worker Visas to Boost Agricultural Sector

The United Kingdom is set to offer 43,000 seasonal worker visas to bolster its agricultural sector, extending the visa program for an additional five years until 2029. This move, aimed at addressing labor shortages and enhancing productivity, follows Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s announcement of unprecedented farming grants at the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) Conference earlier this year.

Prime Minister Sunak revealed a substantial £427 million investment in farming productivity schemes, doubling previous funding levels. The new visa allocation includes specific provisions for the horticulture sector and an extra 2,000 visas for the poultry sector starting in 2025.

Environment Secretary Steve Barclay emphasized the importance of the measures, stating, “We have a world-class food and drink sector, and the measures announced today will strengthen this by boosting funding for the cutting-edge technology that will reduce reliance on migrant labor in the long term. Businesses do best when they can plan effectively for the future, which is why we’ve extended the seasonal worker visa route until 2029 to give farmers and growers the certainty they need to thrive.”

The extended visa route is designed to provide stability and clear guidance for farmers and agricultural businesses, allowing them to plan and adapt over the coming years while integrating advanced technologies to reduce dependence on seasonal migrant workers.
