UK Doctor Leaves Patient Mid-Surgery to Have Sex with Nurse, Tribunal Hears

A UK medical tribunal has heard how a consultant anaesthetist abandoned an operation midway to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another room. Dr Suhail Anjum, who was working at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, reportedly told colleagues he needed a “comfort break” during surgery, leaving a patient under anaesthetic. He then went to a different theatre, where he was found in a compromising position with Nurse C by a shocked staff member, who later reported the incident.

Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council, confirmed that no harm came to the patient during Dr Anjum’s absence and the procedure continued without further incident.

Dr Anjum admitted to the allegations, describing his behaviour as “shameful.” In a statement to the tribunal, he said: “It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame.” He apologised to those involved, adding: “I offer my sincere apologies to everyone involved and I want the opportunity to put this right.” He explained that the lapse in judgement came during what he described as a stressful time for his family.
