UK Council Accountant Jailed for Stealing Over £1 Million to Fund Gambling Addiction
A senior accountant from Gedling Borough Council in Nottinghamshire has been sentenced to five years in prison after embezzling nearly £1 million over a span of two decades to fuel his online gambling addiction.
Alan Doig, 57, who had worked at the council for 38 years, siphoned off £934,000 from public funds, diverting the money into his personal accounts. The Nottingham Crown Court heard that Doig exploited his position and knowledge of the council’s IT system, creating fake invoices and manipulating a car loan scheme to carry out the fraud.
Prosecutor Alan Murphy revealed that Doig’s addiction drove him to spend up to £2,000 per night on gambling. “It was all he thought about, day in and day out,” Murphy said during the hearing.
The scheme was uncovered when an assistant accountant detected financial discrepancies while preparing a report for HMRC, triggering an investigation that ultimately exposed Doig’s long-running embezzlement.
Gedling Borough Council’s chief executive, Mike Hill, expressed the profound impact of the crime on both the council and the local community. “This loss has had a real and significant impact on not only the council, but every individual resident in the borough,” Hill said. The stolen funds represented 19% of the council’s current resources, making the financial blow even more devastating.
Doig, once considered a respected and trusted colleague, admitted to charges of fraud by abuse of position and obtaining money through deception. His actions have left a deep sense of betrayal among council staff and residents alike.
