U.S Visa Rush: Demand Exceeds Supply as 150,000 Nigerians Pursue Interviews This Year

In an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, David Greene, the charge d’affaires of the United States embassy in Nigeria, revealed the challenges faced by the embassy due to overwhelming demand for visa applications.

According to Greene, the US embassy has encountered a significant surge in demand for visa appointments, surpassing the available supply. In the year 2023 alone, the embassy has conducted interviews for over 150,000 Nigerians, including 30,000 students.

Greene acknowledged the imbalance between the demand and supply of visa appointments, emphasizing the embassy’s commitment to addressing the gap. He highlighted the substantial progress made in reducing a backlog that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated, “We have made great progress, though. In March, we instituted a five-year term for visas to the US.”

Encouraging Nigerians planning to travel to the United States, Greene urged applicants to apply early and align their visa applications with specific events. Recognizing the existing backlog, he assured that efforts are underway to ensure that individuals in need of a US visa can obtain one.

As the embassy grapples with the high demand, Greene assured the public that measures are being taken to facilitate a smoother visa application process. The emphasis on early applications and tying them to specific events is seen as a strategic approach to managing the current challenges and ensuring a more efficient visa issuance process.
