Two Police Inspectors Disgraced, Dismissed Over Allegations of Armed Robbery, Illegal Duty
Assistant Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Ali has issued the dismissal of two police inspectors, Sunday Adetoye and Ogunleye Stephen, from the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos. The decision comes in the wake of their involvement in armed robbery, official corruption, and illegal duty, as revealed during an Orderly Room trial.
Inspectors Adetoye (Force number 279495) and Stephen (Force number 223521), along with two members of a Vigilante Group, Semiu Afisu and Abidoye Femi, and a driver named Charles John, are accused of raiding a residence in the Obada-Oko community in Ogun State on November 23, 2023, at 10 pm. Armed with Submachine SMG rifles and live ammunition, they allegedly conducted an unauthorized search on the property of Taiwo Monsuru and Akintola Sunday, making off with five iPhones, a Samsung smartphone, a Tecno smartphone, and two laptop computers.
Zonal Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Ayuba, commented on the incident, stating, “Police officers attached to Ifo Division acted promptly, setting up a roadblock after receiving information from other residents about the incident and the description of the vehicle.” The occupants of the vehicle, including Adetoye and Stephen, were apprehended, with ASP Ajayi Victor, who led the operation, currently at large.
In response to the dismissals, AIG Mohammed Ali has directed that the former officers, along with the civilians involved, be charged in court. He emphasizes the importance of professionalism among all officers and urges them to adhere to the law in the discharge of their duties. Ali warns that any officer found wanting will be held accountable for their actions or inaction. The incident stands as a stark reminder of the commitment to maintaining integrity within the police force.
