Two Military Officers Flee as Authorities Deepen Probe into Alleged Coup Plot

Two Nigerian military officers have reportedly gone into hiding after being named among suspects in an alleged plot to overthrow the country’s democratic government. Military authorities have intensified arrests following the interrogation of 16 officers detained in early October in connection with the failed coup attempt.

Sources revealed that 18 officers were initially marked for arrest, but two—believed to have fled the country—remain at large. One of them, Major J.M. Ganaks, with service number N/14363, hails from the Federal Capital Territory and is said to be a member of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 58. His last known posting was at Jaji, Kaduna State. The second fugitive, Captain G. Binuga, with service number N/167722, is from Taraba State and was reportedly stationed at DHQ SOF Bida in Niger State. He belongs to NDA Regular Course 64.

Military insiders disclosed that several of the detained officers have provided “useful statements,” leading to further arrests. Estimates suggest that more than 30 officers are now in custody. While some detainees have remained silent, others are said to be cooperating fully with investigators.

Contrary to earlier reports suggesting that the coup was planned for October 1, sources clarified that arrests began in the first week of the month. The Defence Headquarters has not officially confirmed the alleged plot, maintaining that the ongoing investigation is part of a “routine internal process” to uphold discipline and professionalism within the ranks.
