Two Dead, Several Injured in Anambra Carnival Fireworks Explosion
At least two people have died and several others, including children, sustained injuries following a fireworks explosion at a community carnival in Umuchu, Aguta Local Government Area of Anambra State on December 29.
Eyewitnesses reported that the blast occurred when a high-intensity “knockout” firework detonated unexpectedly near the main stage, sending revellers into panic. One victim, identified as Ugochi, died at the scene, while a second succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. Residents warn that the death toll may rise, as several injured individuals suffered severe burns and lacerations.
“The knockout exploded like a bomb,” said one eyewitness. “People near the stage fell immediately. The sound was terrifying, and everyone started shouting for help.”
Video footage circulating from the event shows smoke and confusion as crowds fled the area. Disturbing images also emerged of victims being rushed for medical attention, including a teenage girl estimated to be around 14 years old, who appeared to have sustained serious neck injuries.
A family member of Ugochi confirmed her death in a voice note, describing how she had returned home for the holidays and was simply dancing when the explosion occurred.
Residents reported that children were among the most affected, with some suffering burns to the face and body. The fireworks used were reportedly packed in cartons and capable of multiple rounds of explosions, making the incident particularly severe.
Local authorities and community leaders have not issued statements about the incident, prompting concern from residents who fear the situation is being downplayed. As of Tuesday morning, there was also no official response from the Anambra State Government or emergency services. Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful.
