Trump Threats: Fresh Details Emerge on Tinubu’s Planned Visit to the White House

New information has emerged regarding President Bola Tinubu’s planned visit to the United States, following recent warnings from President Donald Trump over alleged attacks on Christians in Nigeria.

Presidential sources confirmed that Tinubu is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for high-level diplomatic engagements with the U.S. government. However, it was learned that Trump has delegated his vice president, JD Vance, to meet with Tinubu during the visit, barring any last-minute adjustments.

The development follows Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and his stern warning that the U.S. may take military action if the killings of Christians persist.

“If the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and may very well go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing,” Trump had said in a statement that drew global attention.

Responding to the statement, the Nigerian presidency dismissed any notion of religious persecution, insisting that Nigeria remains a democracy committed to upholding constitutional rights and religious freedom.

“Since 2023, our administration has maintained open engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders and continues to tackle security challenges that affect citizens across faiths,” Tinubu said in a statement on Saturday.

The president also cautioned against what he described as a “mischaracterisation” of Nigeria’s religious landscape by external observers, insisting that such claims do not reflect the nation’s diversity or the government’s ongoing peace efforts.

Tinubu’s media aide, Daniel Bwala, emphasized that both leaders share a strong interest in counterterrorism and global security cooperation.

“President Trump has assisted Nigeria a lot by authorising the sale of arms to Nigeria, and President Tinubu has effectively utilized that support in the fight against terrorism,” Bwala stated.

He added that any perceived differences between both administrations regarding the nature of terrorist activities in Nigeria would be addressed during the visit.

“The differences, if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet at either the State House or the White House,” he said.

The upcoming visit is expected to focus on deepening bilateral ties, strengthening counterterrorism cooperation, and reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to religious freedom and national unity.
