Trump Says Iran Has Agreed to Resume Talks After US-Israeli Strikes

President Donald Trump has said Iran is prepared to return to negotiations with the United States following recent US-Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory.

In an interview with **The Atlantic**, Trump said Iranian officials initiated contact and that he accepted the proposal to resume discussions. Speaking by phone with reporter **Michael Scherer**, he stated: “They want to talk, and I have agreed to talk.”

Trump said Tehran had delayed engaging with Washington earlier, describing previous US demands as “very practical and easy to do.” He also indicated that several Iranian officials who had previously taken part in negotiations were no longer alive following the recent strikes.

The remarks come after coordinated US-Israeli attacks on multiple Iranian cities. Iranian state media and regional observers reported that **Ali Khamenei**, Iran’s supreme leader, and **Abdolrahim Mousavi**, the country’s armed forces chief of staff, were killed in the operation. Members of Khamenei’s family were also reported among the dead.

With Khamenei’s death, Iran has entered a transitional phase as the **Assembly of Experts** prepares to select a successor.

Trump did not identify which Iranian officials are leading the renewed outreach to Washington.

Iranian authorities have declared a period of national mourning. Senior commanders within the Revolutionary Guard and other defence officials were also reported killed.

Casualty figures continue to rise. Iranian officials and regional monitors estimate that more than 200 people have been killed and over 700 injured since the strikes began. In Israel, authorities report at least nine deaths and more than 100 injuries following retaliatory missile and drone attacks launched from Iran.
