Trump Pardons Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has granted a full and unconditional pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road, an underground online marketplace that facilitated over $200 million in illegal transactions using Bitcoin.
Ulbricht, now 40, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced in 2015 to two life terms plus 40 years without the possibility of parole. His conviction was tied to his role in operating Silk Road, which enabled drug sales and other illicit activities on the dark web.
Announcing the pardon on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump criticized the prosecutors involved in the case, calling them “some of the same lunatics” responsible for what he describes as the political weaponization of the government against him. He condemned Ulbricht’s sentencing as “ridiculous” and said he personally called Ulbricht’s mother to deliver the news.
