Trump Imposes 25% Tariffs on Colombia After Deportation Flights were Denied Entry

US President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on all goods from Colombia after the country refused entry to US military planes carrying deported migrants. The decision escalates tensions between the two nations as Trump pushes forward with his mass deportation agenda.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared on his official X account that the country would not permit the flights to land, criticizing the US for treating Colombian migrants as criminals. “I deny the entry of American planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory,” Petro wrote, adding that the US must establish a protocol for the “dignified treatment of migrants” before Colombia would accept deportees.

US officials told the BBC that two flights from San Diego, scheduled to land in Colombia, were blocked due to Petro’s order. In response, Trump announced emergency tariffs on Truth Social, stating they would take effect “immediately.” He warned that if Colombia did not comply, the tariffs would be raised to 50 percent within a week.

Trump also imposed additional penalties, including a travel ban and “immediate visa revocations” for Colombian government officials. He said visa sanctions would extend to Colombian government supporters and that customs and border inspections of Colombian nationals and cargo would be intensified for national security reasons. “These measures are just the beginning,” Trump stated.

The US president accused Colombia of violating its legal obligations regarding the acceptance of deported individuals. He emphasized that his administration would not allow Colombia to reject people it had “forced into the United States.”

The move aligns with Trump’s campaign promise to implement large-scale deportations of undocumented migrants. Since taking office, he has signed multiple executive orders expanding immigration enforcement, giving US authorities broader powers to arrest and deport those in the country unlawfully.
