Troops Reclaim Orsu LGA from IPOB, Begin Removal of Explosives

The Nigerian military says it has made significant progress in reclaiming Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State from fighters linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following sustained clearance operations in the region.

During a media tour of Orsuihite Ukwa, the Garrison Commander of the 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze Jude Agbo, confirmed that troops are now focused on removing landmines and improvised explosive devices planted along key roads. The effort is aimed at restoring safe movement and access within affected communities.

Orsu has witnessed prolonged violence and repeated attacks, forcing many residents to flee. Large parts of the area remain deserted, with widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure.

Troops under Operation Udoka visited several locations, including boundary communities between Imo and Anambra State, where earlier confrontations with suspected militants took place. According to the military, several buildings previously used as operational bases by the armed groups have been cleared.

Economic activity in the area has also been severely disrupted. The Ekeututu Market, once a major commercial hub, has been largely destroyed, leaving trade at a standstill.

Military officials reported that multiple improvised explosive devices have been successfully cleared from access routes leading into the community, a step considered critical to enabling the return of displaced residents.

Community leaders in Orsu welcomed the military’s intervention and urged the Federal Government to maintain the momentum of the operation until the area is fully secured.

The military said the operation forms part of a broader plan to stabilise the region, facilitate the return of residents, and support the recovery of local economic activities.
