“Transmission of Election Results Electronically Is Mandatory” – House Spokesman Rotimi
The House of Representatives has confirmed that sending election results electronically is compulsory under the recently passed Electoral Act provisions.
House spokesman Hon. Akin Rotimi made the statement on Tuesday during an interview with Arise Television, stressing that the requirement is clearly spelled out in the legislation approved by the National Assembly.
Rotimi explained that while the House passed its version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill in December, the Senate’s version contained some differences. A joint committee of members from both chambers was established to harmonize the conflicting provisions.
“The committee reviewed the provisions thoroughly. While these deliberations were ongoing, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the electoral timetable,” he said.
He added, “The law specifies that presiding officers must electronically transmit results from polling units to the IREV portal.”
Tuesday’s House proceedings saw tension as some lawmakers attempted to rescind the bill, leading to heated exchanges on the floor.
