Trader Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Goat Theft
A Magistrates’ Court in Jos has sentenced a trader, Zih Davou, to 18 months imprisonment for stealing a he-goat from a man’s house.
The presiding magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, handed down the sentence after Davou pleaded guilty to the theft. In his ruling, Bokkos offered an alternative: a fine of N50,000 to avoid a year of imprisonment and an additional compensation of N50,000 to the complainant or six more months behind bars in default.
Details of the Crime
Prosecutor Inspector Ijuptil Thiawur revealed that the crime was reported on August 19 at the “B” Division police station by the complainant, Fawole Ayodeji. Davou reportedly broke into Ayodeji’s residence and stole a goat valued at N100,000.
Inspector Thiawur added that Davou was not new to theft, saying, “The same convict had been arrested before for stealing 15 measures of rice, 10 measures of fertilizer, and a bundle of zinc from this same house.”
The court found the offence in violation of provisions within the Plateau Penal Code Law.
